Petter Southall at Sladers Yard

Come to our unspoilt Georgian warehouse to see the charismatic steam bent furniture of Petter Southall with intensely powerful artists, David Inshaw, Henrietta Hoyer Millar and Marie-Claire Hamon. Henrietta Hoyer Millar’s small paintings depict the Dorset landscape close to her studio, deeply familiar and lovingly observed. She portrays her private world with a keen sense of colour , texture and form creating her acclaimed gem-like works. Marie-Claire Hamon’s pale haunting dreamscapes mix charm with restraint. New etchings and paintings by the brilliant David Inshaw are on a favourite theme: Cricket at Little Bredy.
In addition you will find a wonderful display of top quality ceramics, jewellery, baskets, leather bags and purses, woodware, sculpture, textiles, clothes and knitware, all handmade by British, mostly local artist craftspeople.

The stunning timber and stone interior of Sladers Yard makes an inspiring setting for contemporary work, sympathetically converted by award-winning designer maker Petter Southall. He has been making his sculptural furniture at the i tre studio outside Bridport since 1991. Combining boat building techniques with fine cabinet making, his designs include solid hardwoods steam bent into curves, arches and rings. Finished with natural oils and tactile textures, his work is made for everyday use and enjoyment.

A constant and vital feature of Sladers Yard, Petter’s furniture creates a benchmark for the many highly talented makers we show here. With the emphasis on functional, practical and beautiful work, the yard represents an artist-led stand against a careless throw-it-away mentality. Please come, be inspired and support us.

Our café specialises in organic, locally sourced fresh or fair trade produce home made into delicious lunches, cakes, ice creams, coffees, teas and Dorset cream teas, served all day in our flower filled courtyard and inside.
