239 John Meaker
Painter and tutor at Abbotsbury Studio
I intend to challenge an immediate response with intelligent and primitive metamorphoses.
Having studied the craftsmanship and choreography of human figures, I make images and icons. As narratives I choose ancient and pastoral myths that have contemporary resonance.
In my recent work I aspire to the tradition of "Figurative Transformation" exemplified by Duchamp's "Nude Descending a Staircase", de Kooning's "Attic" and "Excavation", the contemporary paintings of Cecily Brown, and El Greco's "Opening of the Fifth Seal".
I experiment with chaos and visualisation, rhythm, tone, and spontaneous gesture; leading your lively and impatient eye over and around the painting's surface.
