Short, free, introductions to hand embroidery can be arranged throughout Dorset Arts weeks during opening times, by contacting Rachel Celia directly.
Hand embroidery is surprisingly straightforward, endlessly adaptable and requires minimal tools and materials. We don't need to spend years perfecting the skill of the Chinese or Japanese embroiderers to get enormous pleasure from a handful of simple stitches.

DISABILITY AND MAKING ART OR CRAFTS

This event is an in person event.

TUESDAY 4 JUNE

55 James Rd, Dorchester DT1 2HB

Learn that new skill NOW and don't give up those that give you pleasure.

Rachel Celia has been a practitioner in many mediums including ceramics and steel. After repeated surgery on her right hand she now works in textiles and other lighter mediums. Having been employed for many years, however, to work with people with much more severe disabilities, she had learnt that there is often a way round many challenges. Many solutions are extremely simple, but so many people just give up a practice they love because it's so hard to get advice. Disability aids providers have gadgets to help your hands to reach every possible corner of your body with soap and water and dress yourself, large print playing cards and a rack to hold them! That’s it!
We can do better than that.

So come and see Rachel's gadgets and pick her brains to find solutions to the challenges you have.

FREE Drop in 11am - 4pm
Other times by appointment.

DISABILITY AND MAKING ART OR CRAFTS

WORLDS WITHIN WORLDS: An Exhibition of Art by Carol-Anne Savage

This event is an in person event.

SATURDAY 25 MAY

C Wing, Dorchester Prison, North Square, Dorchester DT1 1JD

When HMP Dorchester closed in 2013 it was the end of over 900 years of prison history in the town. Local artist Carol-Anne Savage was intrigued by this historic building after taking a tour of the site in late 2021. She has since been visiting the site regularly to work and take photographs before it is lost (there is planning permission to demolish it and build residential flats). Her research has also led to an exploration of some of the the many records and photographs on the prison held by Dorset History Centre's archive.

This pop-up exhibition is a showcase of some of the artworks she has made in response to this atmospheric place. Carol-Anne is a multidisciplinary artist who works in a variety of media including photography, installation and collage. She particularly enjoys using vintage objects in her work to reimagine and reveal new narratives. This exhibition allows those stories to come full circle by displaying them in the place that originally inspired them.

She will be on site all day to talk about her work and will also be joined by Ed Wilson who worked there for many years as a Prison Officer and leads twice monthly full tours of the building. He is hugely knowledgeable about its history and operation and will be happy to chat, answer questions and you can also book onto a forthcoming tour if you are keen to find out more.
Following the on-site exhibition the work will then be on show at Carol-Anne’s studio at Mellstock Farm in Higher Bockhampton (Venue 155 in the Guide).
