239. John Meaker

PAINTER AND TUTOR AT ABBOTSBURY STUDIO

I intend to challenge an immediate response with intelligent and

primitive metamorphoses.

Having studied the craftsmanship and choreography of human figures, I

make images and icons. As narratives I choose ancient and pastoral

myths that have contemporary resonance.

In my recent work I aspire to the tradition of ‘Figurative Transformation’

exemplified by Duchamp’s ‘Nude Descending a Staircase’, de Kooning’s

‘Attic’ and ‘Excavation’, the contemporary paintings of Cecily Brown, and

El Greco’s ‘Opening of the Fifth Seal’.

I experiment with chaos and visualisation, rhythm, tone, and spontaneous

gesture, leading your lively and impatient eye over and around the

painting’s surface.
